5 THINGS TO DO IN GANSBAAI, SOUTH AFRICA

Just a short two hour drive out of Cape Town is the small town of Gansbaai, probably better known around the world as the place to go shark cage diving in South Africa. Here are 5 things you must do during your stay in Gansbaii, South Africa.

1. Shark Cage Dive with Great White Sharks

To be honest you are probably reading this post because you have already decided that want to dive with the sharks and you are searching what else you can do once you have finished? You made the drive out here so why not check out what else is on amiright?

If you haven't decided on doing shark cage diving already, then why not? We did our first dive for my sisters 21st birthday back in 2015 and loved it. We headed out with Marine Dynamics who do Eco Shark Cage Dives without ever feeding the sharks and assist in the conservation of these amazing species.

Price: $152 per person.

2. Go Whale Watching

If you plan to do the above with Marine Dynamics then make sure you have a chat to them about adding on a whale watching tour whilst you're out here. It's organised through their sister company Dyer Island Cruises but there are others if you wanted to shop around.

During our session we saw a Southern Right Whale mum with her baby calf as well as Cape Fur seals and Great White sharks.

Price: $107 per person

3. Visit the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary

Yes I was shocked too when I found out that Africa had penguins that weren't on Madagascar? South Africa has their very own penguin colony here in Gansbaii and there is a big issue with the population declining at a rapid rate. This sanctuary has been set up to save and rescue the African penguin, so why not come past and drop a donation to help them out.

Price: Free with donation available if you see fit.

4. Explore the Dunes on Quad Bikes

So your sea legs are not up for another ride on the boat? Why not switch it to some quad biking along the dunes. There are a couple of companies that can take you out as you explore the beautiful landscape at adrenaline pumping speeds.

Price: $43 per hour

5. Volunteer with Marine Conservation

Or if you are down for it, you can spend a week volunteering at GoEco's Great White Shark & Penguin Conservation project where you can do 3 of the above activities as part of your week. Whilst you are doing marine conservation you get to assist the sharks, kitting up the boats, help the marine biologist with their research and the best bit you can shark cage dive every single day!

Price: $800 for one week including food, board, airport transfers and the volunteer project

A few of the tasks you get up to whilst volunteering:

  • Tracking sharks

  • Tourism education and helping tourists on board

  • Research observation on whales, dolphins, penguins, seals, or sea birds

  • Working with local children in education and beach clean-up

  • Data input
