If you're like us and tend to find yourself day dreaming about summer getaway's to Europe, but push that dream aside as there is no way you could afford a trip to Europe right now. Well, we are here to make that dream into a reality!
Here are 10 of the cheapest cities to visit in Europe this summer that won't break the bank.
10. Berlin, Germany
First up on our list is the German city of Berlin. Alcohol is cheap, food is affordable, and accommodation is very reasonable — which is why Berlin is such a hotspot for artists, students, and budget travellers. A cheap way to see the city is by taking a walking tour. It's a great thing to do on your first day as it's a fantastic way to get orientated with the city. There are a number of free (tip-based) tours to choose from!
9. Sarajevo, Bosnia
Sarajevo is one of Europe's cheapest capitals, and outside the city the prices just get lower. Eating out can cost as little as 3-5 Bosnian Marks (that's less than $3 a meal). Its historic center blends East and West - giving visitors a sense that they're in Vienna one minute and Istanbul the next!
8. Crete, Greece
Don’t be put off Greece by the country’s economic crisis – if anything, the current financial situation is all the more reason to travel here and to support the local people. The situation also means that prices are currently cheaper than usual, which is perfect for those travelling on a budget, and means that you might be able to squeeze an extra island or two into your itinerary!
7. Split, Croatia
Visiting Croatia doesn't need to be expensive - especially if you decide to head to Split rather than Dubrovnik.
Split is known for being the transportation hub along the Croatian coast, and the gateway to many nearby islands. The Old City here is even older than Dubrovnik’s and in many ways it’s just as impressive. Prices here are far cheaper than those in Dubrovnik, so it’s a much better stop for most people, as it also feels far less touristy - a win win for us!
6. Valencia, Spain
Ahhhhh, Spain. A diverse country with the third largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, friendly locals, a relaxed lifestyle, incredible cuisine and nightlife and world famous festivities - how can you not spend your summer here?
When choosing which city to visit when in Spain we recommend heading to Valencia. With hostels for around 10 EUR, cheap tapas and meals for around 6-12 EUR and transportation costing 1.50 EUR for a bus around the city, it's not too hard to travel on a budget in a city like Valencia.
5. Krawkow, Poland
Krawkow is the perfect budget destination to visit, being able to easily travel on 25 to 30 euros a day. The city is small enough to explore by foot, bike rentals are of great value, the street food is cheap and delicious, hostels are affordable and many include breakfast and if you time it right you can visit museums here for free!
4. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is not only a cheap visit to travel to, it is also the perfect city to use as a base for flying into and around Europe.
Due to its strategic location as the western most country of mainland Europe, Portugal is directly connected by air to half of the world. This means flights are usually cheap from half of the world! Plus, low-cost airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet fly from Lisbon to most of the major european cities for less than 100 euros.
3. Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul has it all - over 2500 years of history, culture, and traditions, amazing landmarks, vibrant nightlife, breathtaking views and a visit won't break the bank.
Though seeing all the major sights like the Aya Sofya, Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace can quickly eat into your lira, the city can still be great for tighter budgets. Arguably the best ways to really soak up the city are from a Bosphorous ferry, wandering the streets of the Grand Bazaar, or on a streetside terrace with a freshly-cooked kebab. Travelling on a budget is all about how you choose to see a city.
2. Prague, Czech Republic
If you are looking to travel to a city straight out of a fairytale, than you need to visit Prague!
Prague offers a compact city center, a fascinating centuries-long history, incredible examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Art Nouveau architecture, an array of palaces, churches, parks and squares, delicious local Czech beer and food, but where it wins hands down is in its affordability. Since the Czech currency Krona has an unbelievably good exchange rate compared to the Euro this city had to be added to the list!

Time for our number one affordable city in Europe. Budapest! If you haven't been here, it's time you make plans to do so this summer. The city appeals to many: you can step out of a thermal bath and right into a nightclub (and then back into the bath). In a city that dates back to the Old Stone Age, visiting history buffs can take their pick between Roman, neo-Gothic, Renaissance and Ottoman architecture at sites like Castle Hill and Fisherman's Bastion.
Public transportation in Budapest is cheap and very easy to use. There is also a bunch of cheap Airbnb's we recommend you check out during your stay!
