WEEKEND IN MANCHESTER | EVERYTHING TO DO, SEE & EAT

We recently spent almost an entire month travelling through the UK via the trains. We wanted to explore cities we had yet to discover, and Manchester was one of the cities at the top of our list.

During our weekend here, we soon realised how incredible Manchester is - and we totally recommend coming up for a cityscape. The city is full of culture, stunning buildings and delicious food, basically everything we look for in a city worth visiting!

Check out our YouTube video below to check out everything to see, do, eat and where to stay when heading to Manchester, and keep on scrolling for more info.

How to Get There

The best way to get to Manchester is via the train. Direct trains run from London Euston to Manchester every 20 minutes, and average journey times are around 2 hours 10 minutes.

We are currently travelling throughout the UK with our BritRail passes from ACP Rail - giving us unlimited train access across England, Scotland and Wales. We recommend checking them out if you are planning on an extended trip to the UK!

Things To Do

John Rylands Library

John Rylands is not your standard library - it is basically like walking into Hogwarts. Built in 1890, this stunning Victorian gothic building looks more like a castle than a library. Spend a morning walking through the rooms filled with books, taking in the impressive architecture and the detail of the building.

John Rylands Library is also home to a fine collection of books and manuscripts including one of the oldest pieces of the New Testament, the St John fragment.

Location: 150 Deansgate, Manchester M3 3EH, UK

Junkyard Golf Club

If you are looking for something fun and unique during a night out in Manchester we highly recommend checking out Junkyard Golf Club. There are three funky nine hole golf courses to choose from (we suggest the glow in the dark course). The place is full of loud music, the golf balls are multi coloured, there a bars serving all types of cocktails and plenty of food stands with all your favourite unhealthy snacks.

Location: 2 First St, Manchester M15 4RP, UK

Northern Quarter

The Northern Quarter is our favourite part area in Manchester. Known as the hipster hotspot, here you can easily spend an entire day (or a weekend) without even leaving this small district. There are a bunch of hidden bars, coffee shops, secret streets and plenty of shopping - all tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city center.

Manchester Museum

The Manchester Museum is England's largest university museum with a collection of 4,500,000 items from all around the world. The museum holds a number of galleries focussing on topics such as archaeology, fossils, the ancient world and world culture. If you find yourself in Manchester on a rainy day this is the best museum to go check out!

Location: University of Manchester, Oxford Rd, Manchester M13 9PL, UK

Where To Stay

If you are looking for a place to stay in Manchester, we can not recommend The Principal Manchester enough.

Set in the heart of Manchester's city centre, the Principal Manchester underwent a multi-million pound refurbish back in 2016, and offers stylish, modern rooms that are only a minutes walk away from Oxford Road Rail Station. The rooms are elegantly decorated, with floor to ceiling windows, plush bedding and a stunning bathroom filled with amenities.

The buffet breakfast here is some of the best way have had, and the coffee is amazing!

Location:Oxford St, Manchester M60 7HA, UK

What To Eat

The Bay Horse Tavern

If you are looking for your typical pub meal we highly recommend heading to The Bay Horse Tavern. Here they serve up traditional dishes like rotisserie chicken, pies with mash and fish & chips - all so, so delicious! The decor of the pub is also stunning and very unique compared to many other pubs we have visited while in England.

Location: 35-37 Thomas St, Manchester M4 1NA, UK

School For Scandal

If you are looking for a place to have a nice night out we recommend checking out School For Scandal. We ended up going out for dinner here after the Junkyard Golfing as it is just down the road. The food served here is some of the best we have had in all of England.

The atmosphere and decor of this place is fantastic - super laidback and beautifully decorated. We ordered the tuna tacos & salmon skewer with a large salad - both so tasty!

Location: 13 Jack Rosenthal Street, First St M15 4FN, United Kingdom

Fig + Sparrow

Fig + Sparrow, located in Manchester's Northern Quarter, is our favourite coffee spot in town. Here they serve high end coffee, with beautiful latte art. They also serve a bunch of yummy cakes and scones that perfectly pair with a hot cup of joe.

Location: 20 Oldham St, Manchester M1 1JA, UK
