48 HOURS IN LIVERPOOL | EVERYTHING TO SEE & DO
During our recent travels through the UK, we wanted to explore more cities north of London. Liverpool has been on our list for a while now, so we decided to catch the train up from London for a weekend in the city.
Liverpool is a quirky place full of music and art, with back streets lined with boutique stores and beautiful architecture scattered throughout

How to Get There
The best way to get to Liverpool is via the train. Direct trains run from London to Liverpool around 18 times a day, and average journey times are around 2 hours 20 minutes.
We are currently travelling throughout the UK with our BritRail passes from ACP Rail – giving us unlimited train access across England, Scotland and Wales. We recommend checking them out if you are planning on an extended trip to the UK!
Things To Do
Take a Ferry along the Mersey
If you are wanting to get a picturesque view of the Liverpool skyline, we suggest boarding a ferry. Here they take you on a little tour, sharing with you a brief history of the city, as you cruise across the Mersey. As we passed iconic buildings and learnt about Liverpool's culture, they played the famous song "Ferry Across the Mercy" - a song about the very river we were on!
We got our ferry tickets from Mersey Ferries on their River Explorer Cruise for £9.
Take a Stroll along Bold Street
Bold Street was our favourite area we explored in Liverpool. This street is known for its great food, amazing atmosphere and quirky independent boutique stores. We recommend simply taking a stroll, looking out for hidden gems or cool cafes that you may want to check out.
Cathedral of Liverpool
If you are looking for a good view point of the city we recommend heading to Liverpool Cathedral. Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the famous British red telephone box, this building is a landmark for Liverpool. Here you will find his smallest creation inside his largest!
It is free to enter the cathedral, but if you want to head up the Vestey Tower to check out the 360˚ views of the city it will cost you £5.50.
The Beatles
Liverpool is famous for being the birthplace of the Beatles. You can't visit Liverpool without doing at least one Beatles related activity. A few we suggest are...
The Beatles Story on the Albert Dock: This is the ultimate dedication to the Fab Four, an award winning exhibition where you can learn everything there is to know about this famous boy band.
Magical Mystery Tour: This two hour bus trip takes you through Liverpool's various Beatles Landmarks, including Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.
The Cavern Club: You can't visit Liverpool without visiting the legendary club where The Beatles held their first performance back in 1961.
Go to a Gig at Constellations
Constellations & The Observatory is an award winning, event space in the heart of Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle. The space is a regenerated warehouse and recycling yard where they hold many live music gigs. We recommend checking out if there is anything being held here during your visit to the city.
Superlambanana!!
You can visit Liverpool without seeing its famous Superlambanana sculpture. You’ll see them all over the city, but the first and main one is standing 17 feet tall on Tithebarn Street. This is a big symbol in Liverpool and you’ll see the mini versions everywhere!
British Music Experience
Seeing as Liverpool has such a musical past, we recommend spending some time at the British Music Experience. Here they tell the story of British Music through costumes, instruments, performance and memorabilia.
Here you can see outfits worn by artists from Freddie Mercury and Dusty Springfield, to the Spice Girls, Adam Ant and X Factor finalists and musical instruments played by some of the world’s most renowned artists from Noel Gallagher to the Sex Pistols. There's even handwritten song lyrics from Adele, the original statues from the Brits and the Apple Corp front door from Saville Row.
