1. Visit the Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is one of the most famous Sikh temples in the world, and a trip to Amritsar is not complete without a visit. Built in 1577, the temple consists of a gleaming central shrine surrounded by water which is ringed by a marble walkway. The water is said to have healing powers, and pilgrims come from all across the world to bathe in its sacred waters.

The Golden Temple is also home to the largest langar in the world. Here food is served to all visitors regardless of faith or background. It typically feeds 40,000 people every day for free, with some religious holidays and weekends feedings upwards of 100,000 people a day!

2. Visit the Jallianwala Bagh

Jallianwala Bagh is a public garden in Amritsar known for being the site of the most tragic events in India's history. This is where the Amritsar Massacre of 1919 took place, where the British Army solders opened fire on a huge, unarmed gathering on April 13, 1919. This garden houses a memorial built in honour of the many victims.

3. Experience the Border Closing Ceremony at the Wagah Border

Every day at 5pm Indian and Pakistani border guards meet at the border post to engage in a display of military showmanship. The purpose of the ceremony is to lower the national flag and close the border for the night, but it has become one of the most unique, patriotic and a little bizarre thing we have ever experienced! The ceremony is full of marching, stomping & high kicks - this is something you do not want to miss!

Check out our YouTube video below to get a better understanding of why you need to experience this in person!

4. Godindgarh Fort

This former military fort was closed from public viewing until it was re-opened to the public in 2016. Built in the 1700s, this stunning fort offers not only beautiful architecture and museums to visit, but also has traditional music and dancing, and evening entertainment and light show.

5. Eat a lot of delicious North Indian Food

Amritsar is known to have some of the most delicious northern Indian food in the country. Some foods you can not miss include kulcha, kebabs, tandoori chicken, daal & lassi. If you head to Amritsar we would love hear what your favourite dish was during your visit!
