1. Explore Jama Masjid

Located in the heart of Old Delhi, Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques in all of India. Thousands of people gather here every day to offer their prayers, with the courtyard being able to accommodate up to 25,000 people at one time! It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and it took over 5000 workers to complete this construction.

This mosque is considered to be the best among all mosques built during the Mughal Empire as it was built with a mixture of marble and limestone. The mosque has three impressive gates, four towers and two 40m high minarets constructed out of red sandstone and smooth white marble.

2. Go Shopping in Chandni Chowk

If you are looking to spend an afternoon shopping here in Delhi, you can not miss a visit to Delhi's biggest shopping hub, Chandi Chowk. This market has been around for more than three centuries and is famous not only in India, but all over the world.

3. Watch the Sunrise over Old Delhi Spice Markets

Our favourite spot in Delhi to catch the sunrise is on top of the Old Delhi Spice Markets. We visited here during our cycle tour through Old Delhi (which we highly suggest you do), and spent the morning watching the sunrise while drinking chai. You will get to see the locals getting ready for the day, cooking their breakfast and getting their stalls ready for the busy day ahead.

4. Visit the Kitchen of the Sikh Temple

There is an incredible place in Delhi where people of all religions, cultures and backgrounds can come together to share a meal. The Kitchen of the Sikh Temple feeds over ten thousand people every day, with meals comprising of lentils and vegetables cooked in large pots by volunteers.

The dining hall is a massive room outside the kitchen, filled with people sitting crossed legged, barefoot and sharing this food experience all together.

5. Go on a Street Food Tour

We are obsessed with the food here in Delhi – especially the street food! During our time here we went on two street food tours with Delhi Food Walks and they took us to some of the best spots in all of Delhi.

Many of you have asked us if we have been sick since we have arrived and so far so good. Getting recommendations by the locals & eating at busy, popular spots is the way to go! Check out the video below of all the delicious foods we tried during our time in Delhi.

6. Enjoy the Sunset at Red Fort

Red fort is one of the most historic monuments in Delhi. It gets its name from the red coloured sandstone used for its construction, which also makes it the perfect spot to watch the sunset against the deep red walls.

The fort is located in the city center and was used as a ceremonial spot for the royals. Today it is now used for political and national ceremonies.

7. Visit Humayun's Tomb

If you have time to only see one thing here in Delhi it hands down needs to be Humayun's Tomb. Built in 1570, it is the first garden-tomb built in India and has inspired several major architectural innovations, including the Taj Mahal.

Nine years after the death of Humayan, his widow Bega Begam built this incredible structure. Inside the walls you will find the garden squares along with the stunning symmetrical mausoleum topped by a double dome. You can also see multiple graves of Mughal rulers inside the walled enclosure.

8. Visit Raj Ghat

Raj Ghat is the memorial site dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The ghat is located along the banks of River Yamuna, with a black marble platform built at the spot of cremation of Gandhi, known as the father of the nation. The memorial is open all year long, and there is no admission fee to enter.

9. Cycle through the streets of Old Delhi

One morning we woke up super early to make our way to Old Delhi. Here we explored on bikes, cycling through the back streets. This is one of our favourite things we did during our entire time travelling in India and we highly recommend you experience for yourself when you come to Delhi.

We filmed our entire experience if you want to see what cycling through the streets of Delhi is like.

10. Take a Snap of India Gate

At the centre of New Delhi stands the 42m high India Gate in the middle of a crossroad, very similar to Arc de Triomphe in France. It commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during WWI. The memorial bears the names of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.

IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE ALL THIS AND MORE, WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHECKING OUT THE 13 DAY TOUR WE DID IN INDIA WITH ON THE GO TOURS.
