TIWI ISLAND RETREAT | SECLUDED GETAWAY IN AUSTRALIA'S TOP END
As we travelled through the Top End, we had no idea that it has its very own secluded island getaway… right here in the Northern Territory! Tiwi Island Retreat is located in one of the world’s most remote locations on the Southwest coast of Bathurst Island.
To get the whole experience of Tiwi Island, we headed out there for two nights for a bit of luxury. It was one of our favourite experiences we had here in the NT, and there's so much that you can see and experience while there!

How to Get There
As we said, this location is highly remote. It is not easy to get to, but you do have two options. You can get there if you have your own boat or you can fly. The flight out is only a 20 minute flight with stunning scenic views of the ocean below.
We flew out with Air Frontier which was a full experience in itself, flying in our own tiny plane as a family and landing on a red dirt runway meters for the water! From the tiny runway we were picked up by a fishing boat, greeted by the most kindest staff and taken to the retreat.
The Rooms
What makes Tiwi Island Retreat so unique is that it was originally established as a barramundi fishing lodge and has been refurbished into a resort, with 18 recently refurbished rooms. This includes nine queen rooms, five twin share rooms, and three family rooms with one queen bed and one bunk bed.
Each room has been refurbished in a simple coastal design. This embraces the beachfront setting and also has air conditioning, towels, and crisp linen. It makes you feel like you are at a tropical island getaway while you're there!
Thankfully they have a beautiful pool to cool off in, as we had a resident croc greeting us along the shoreline each morning!
The Experiences
As a tropical island getaway, there are plenty of experiences that you and your family can embark on!
If you are after a dreamy way to watch the sunset we highly recommend their Beach Buggy Cruise and Cheese Platter experience, where you can travel along 4 Mile Beach to a secret creek spot for drinks, cheese and a beach campfire.
You can also go on mud crabbing and fishing adventures. You can catch crab pots, go barra fishing, and even eat what you see at the end of the day!
You can also go to a remote swimming hole by helicopter, take a whole day to go deep-sea fishing by charter, and even spend three private hours on indigenous art and cultural tours. Some of these excursions have to be booked in advance, so make sure you look over the activities before you arrive.
We went on the remote swimming hole adventure by helicopter and did the beach buggy cruise and cheese platter. Both of these experiences were fantastic, and no matter if you are travelling alone, with your partner, or with family, these are family-friendly and fun for everyone!
