A QUICK GUIDE TO MAGNETIC ISLAND, QUEENSLAND

A little short distance, around 8km off the coast of Townsville, Queensland, is Magnetic Island, a mysterious and interesting treasure island that turned out to be the perfect getaway spot for us.

Getting to Magnetic Island

To get to Magnetic Island, or Maggie as the locals prefer, you only need to take a 20-minute ferry on the Sealink ferry from Townsville, which costs around $33 return. We were driving our van, and we obviously couldn’t take it to Maggie with us, so we parked it at the ferry terminal for only $7.50 per day.

Getting Around the Island

We had been craving a dainty getaway ever since we’d touched Queensland, and we found Maggie to be the island of our dreams. When it came to choosing accommodation, we were perplexed by the number of options we had, but we eventually found this stunning Frame cabin in an Airbnb, and I can’t even explain its beauty. It had breath-taking views, a kitchen, a patio/balcony, a washing machine, a fire pit, and WiFi, so of course, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Where To Stay

Now it looks like Maggie might not have much, but surprisingly, the island had its own unique modes of transport like a topless barbie style jeep or a mini Suzuki 4WD. You can hire cars, too, so we decided to hire a convertible fiat and had a blast driving around this magical island and taking in the beautiful sceneries that crossed us.

Top Things to Do

We also did tons of stuff there, and if you’re thinking of trying the Magnetic Island for yourselves, there are a few activities we do recommend:

Visit the Rock Wallabies in Geoffrey Bay

Geoffrey Bay is a beach in Arcadia, Magnetic Island, and is known for its cute little inhabitants, the Rock Wallabies. If you walk toward the Arcadia Jetty Road, then you’ll spot these little animals crawling on the rocks at the very end. They were absolutely cute, and of course, we had to feed them, which only made our experience better.

Enjoy an Acai Bowl on the Beach from the Shaka Food Truck

Who doesn’t love an acai bowl, right? If you’re a sucker for these deliciously healthy bowls, then head over to Shaka Food Truck, which serves some of the most scrumptious bowls we’ve ever had, and you can get them at a good price too!

Go On A Snorkelling Tour Around the Island

There’s really no point in visiting an island if you’re not snorkeling, right? We tried our hand at snorkeling at Maggie, which houses fringing coral reefs and even one or two shipwrecks. You can get quite a few charters, and trust us; it is worth trying!

Take The Forts Walk to See Koalas in the Wild and World War II Ruins

The Fort Walk is the island’s most popular trail, and this is where koalas are in concentrations, so get the cams ready! It also leads to interesting fortifications and structures from WWII.

Watch the Sunset at Horseshoe Bay

Tone down your trip and relax to watch the sunset at Horseshoe Bay, where the soft sand cuddles your toes, and the wind gives you an intimate setting.

Drive a Lap of the Island Finding Hidden Beaches and Bays

Maggie has plenty of hidden gems, so it’s a fun activity to go around the island searching for hidden beaches and bays. We found a few and had an amazing time. Maybe you’ll find a secluded spot and have that beach date night you’ve been hoping for ages to happen!
