HOW TO HAVE THE MOST MEMORABLE WHITSUNDAYS FAMILY EXPERIENCE

Comprised of 74 individual islands, the Whitsundays are the epitome of tropical beauty. Although the white sand beaches and crystal blue waters attract honeymooners and backpackers, it's also a family-friendly destination that we can totally recommend!

If you’re planning a trip to the Whitsunday Islands, then make sure to add these must-do activities to your family holiday!

Hang out on Whitehaven Beach

It doesn't get much prettier than Whitehaven. With seven kilometres of unbelievable soft sand (it is made of 98% silica which makes it almost pure white), it’s the perfect backdrop for your family beach day. Bring your swimsuit, snorkel, and a picnic and enjoy a few hours in paradise.

Snorkel on Daydream Island

Hop over to Daydream Island for a once-in-a-lifetime snorkelling experience. Here, you'll find the Living Reef, a free form lagoon filled with over 100 species of fish and other marine creatures like sharks and rays. We were lucky enough to spend a few days on Daydream Island (the resort is drop-dead gorgeous). However, you can also visit the island on a day trip.

Wander around Hamilton Island

When it comes to recreational activities, there’s no better place to be than Hamilton Island. Kayaking, snorkelling, sailing, hiking, dune-bugging – Hamilton Island has it all. Your little ones might also love a trip to the wildlife sanctuary, where they can get up close and personal to kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and crocodiles.

Explore the Islands by Seaplane

While the Whitsundays are beautiful on land, they're equally as stunning from above! A seaplane tour is an exhilarating journey with a bird's-eye view over the Great Barrier Reef. Some tours also include stopovers, giving you the opportunity to explore other parts of the islands.

This pontoon in the middle of Hardy Reef is an observatory, recreational centre, and hotel all in one! Day-trippers can come to snorkel or dive, although it's also fun just to watch the fish go by in the underwater observatory. If you're planning to stay the night, book one of their two Reefsuites (they feature underwater floor-to-ceiling windows) or a Reefsleep tent on-deck.

Take an Island Sailing Tour

Get out on the open waters and explore the Great Barrier Reef by sailboat. This is one of the best sailing destinations in the world – and it’s easy to see why. With hours of sunshine and ample opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and swimming, sailing is a fun activity the whole family will love.

Relax in the Airlie Beach Lagoon

The Airlie Beach Lagoon is a peaceful spot that feels like a real beach. However, it’s an artificial swimming hole with shallow pools and lifeguards, so it’s perfect for kids or inexperienced swimmers. And it’s right on the coast of the Coral Sea, so you’ll still get the salty ocean breeze while you’re there!

The Whitsundays have a lot to offer all types of travellers – families included! From snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef to lounging on the pristine white-sand beaches on shore, there's plenty here to keep the whole family entertained!
