WEEKEND GETAWAY TO DAYDREAM ISLAND IN QUEENSLAND

As its name implies, Daydream Island might be the most idyllic place in the Whitsundays. But despite its small size (the entire island is only 1km x 400m!), there are plenty of things to keep you entertained during your weekend getaway.

How to Get to Daydream Island

Daydream Island is only accessible by boat. You can either take a cruise directly from Airlie Beach or you can fly into Hamilton Island and take a 30-minute boat from there.

Where to Stay on Daydream Island

Your accommodation options on Daydream Island are limited. There’s only one resort, but thankfully, it’s absolutely amazing!

The Daydream Island Resort is a luxurious getaway right on the beach, with modern rooms, gourmet restaurants, and even a man-made reef! They offer tons of fun activities throughout the day, including yoga, kayaking tours, sailing lessons, guided walks, and movie nights under the stars.

What to do on Daydream Island

Take a Helicopter Ride

Daydream Island is gorgeous on land, but it's even more stunning from above. You'll get to see the swirls of blues and greens as you enjoy the bird's-eye-view of the Great Barrier Reef below. Scenic helicopter tours are available, while other trips can take you to Whitehaven Beach.

Explore the Life Reef

This man-made lagoon is home to 100 different types of marine creatures, including sharks, stingrays, fish, and dozens of bright and colorful corals. You can see the sea life in the underwater observatory, or you can visit the education center and touch sea cucumbers and baby rays in the interactive pool. If you want to see the creatures up close, it's also possible to snorkel the Live Reef.

Explore with a Glass Bottom Boat

You can still see marine life while also staying nice and dry. Take a glass bottom boat into the reef to see corals, tropical fish, and even larger sea life in their natural habitat. The entire tour takes an hour, and you’ll even get the chance to feed the fish during your trip!

Walk Through the Rainforest

The lush rainforest in the middle of the park is the perfect place to see local plants and wildlife (especially lizards and parrots). Best of all, you'll have a breathtaking view from the lookout near the highest point on the island.

Go Sailing

Daydream Island is one of the top destinations in the Whitsundays for sailing. You can take a sailboat tour around the reef or book a beginner sailing glass (offered through the resort) to learn how to caption a boat yourself!

Chill on the Beach

No trip to Daydream Island would be complete without a lazy afternoon on the beach. Grab your sunscreen and a good book and enjoy the sun-soaked shores while being surrounded by swaying palms. There are three beaches on the Island, although Sunlovers Beach is one of the most popular. Here, the waters are calm and water, perfect for swimming or snorkeling.
