EXPLORING TORONTO'S DISTILLERY DISTRICT BY SEGWAY

The Distillery District is one of the most interesting areas to visit here in Toronto. With beautiful red bricks and cobblestoned pathways, the area is full of history and the perfect place to explore, not by foot, but by Segway!

The Distillery District

Back in the early 1800s, Toronto was home to Canada’s largest distilling company, Gooderham-Worts Distillery. The Distillery District is now a national historic site, representing the largest preserved collection of 19th century industrial architecture in all of North America!

This historic pedestrian-only neighbourhood is lined with beautiful Victorian houses and paved with cobblestone, filled with art galleries, workshops, cafés, restaurants and of course a brewery. Located on the corner of Mill St & Cherry St, this area is definitely worth a visit.

Exploring By Segway

When we arrived at the Distillery District with met the friendly folks at Segway of Ontario ready for a morning of Segwaying (if that's a word?). This was both our first time using a Segway, and I will admit we were a little nervous. However after a mini training session we easily got the hang of it and realised anyone could do it! Push forward, you move forward. Push back, you push back. Simple.

Our extremely knowledgable guide led us through the area, sharing with us the incredible history the area holds. Its 44 buildings making up, in our opinion, the most beautiful area of the city. We couldn't stop snapping photos of the beautiful architecture the district holds. We also loved how the entire area is car-free, which made it the perfect area to explore with a Segway.

We were shocked to find out that for many years the Distillery District was left abandoned, and it wasn't until 2001 that a redevelopment of the area began. It’s now one of the wealthiest and sought after real-estate locations in the city - and we can definitely see why!

What else to do in the area?

You can easily spend an entire day at the Distillery District. We recommend heading to the Mill Street Pub for a glass of seasonal brew, or even learn about different types of beer at the Mill Street Beer Hall. Confirm your love at the Love Installation, a giant LOVE covered in locks. Take a browse through all the incredible art galleries. Taste one of the yummiest hot chocolates in the city at Soma Chocolate. Lastly, enjoy the markets! In the summer you can find local produce at the Sunday Markets, and in the winter they transform into a Distillery Christmas market!

Have you ever explored a city by Segway?

Special thanks to Segway of Ontario for showing us around The Distillery District. Our opinion is, as always, our own.
