MOST UNDERRATED PLACE IN SLOVAKIA | HIGH TATRAS MOUNTAINS

When planning our Slovakian road trip I came across an image online that looked absolutely breathtaking. The image was of a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by snow capped mountains and I just knew this had to be a stop on our travels. After some digging I found that the shot was taken from the window of a hotel - the Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras. We did not need anymore convincing! A few minutes later we were booked in for 2 nights to experience this stunning part of Slovakia.

For our full experience staying at this dreamy hotel check out the video below, and keep on scrolling for more info and snaps...

The Hotel

Located in a prime spot next to an alpine lake 1,351m above sea level in the incredible High Tatras, the Grand Hotel Kempinski is a resort like nowhere we have ever stayed! The hotel is a landmark building in the picturesque village of Strbske Pleso and offers an exclusive collection of rooms, with many having spectacular views over the alpine lake.

We stayed in a Deluxe Room with lake views, with a cozy king size bed, stunning marble bathroom with a massive bathtub & shower, a sitting area, coffee machine, big screen TV and free wifi. Each morning we would wake up to the views of the mountain peaks and end the day watching the sun setting over the Tatras Mountains.

The Food

The food at the Kempinski is next level. Breakfast is served in the Grand Restaurant with a full buffet and hot menu with every breakie item you can think of. They even have a champagne bar you can happily help yourself too!

In the evenings, the Grand Restaurant is transformed into an elegant dining hall. The restaurant offers international cuisine made with local ingredients. We dined on a three course meal of vegetable soup, fresh trout with couscous and a delicious chocolate lava cake for dessert.

The Spa

When staying at the Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras you can not miss a visit to the Zion Spa. With a large heated indoor swimming pool and hot tub looking out over the most breathtaking view of lake and mountains - you will want to spend your entire visit lounging here. I can't say I have swum in many hotels pools that have not one, but three chandeliers dangling from above!

The Lake

During our first morning here in the High Tatras we woke up bright and early to be one of the first people to take a wooden boat out onto Strbske Pleso. This has been on our bucket list since we arrived in Slovakia and it is even more dreamier in person! The tradition of boating on this lake is over 130 years old!

For a small boat it will cost you 18€ for 40 minutes out on the water - and trust us, it is well worth it!

Surrounding Hikes

The High Tatras Mountains here in Slovakia are an outdoor paradise. Full of incredible hiking trails, emerald green lakes, jagged mountains and epic cable car rides. There are so many breathtaking hikes throughout the area, and one we highly recommend doing is the hike to Popradské Pleso.

One afternoon we hired some e-bikes from the hotel and cycled along the path that takes you to Popradské Pleso. We passed through stunning fields of wild flowers until we reached the beautiful lake. For lunch suggest grabbing a hot cup of soup from the lake side restaurant.
